Why are photographers so expensive?
I get asked this a lot, so before you ask me how I came up with my pricing, read this first.
First of all, if this is your first time pricing out the services of a professional photographer, then I understand. It looks like I have pulled a magical number out of thin air, and it’s steep. But there is a lot going into the thought process of these numbers. So here’s how I break it down for my clients.
First, if you are considering the services of a professional photographer then you must know that it costs money, so that’s a first step. Second, these are memories that you are going to have forever and can pass on to your family, which is an invaluable asset.
For every hour a spend photographing, I spend another 4-6 hours editing, sorting, uploading, naming, archiving, uploading and resizing. For an 8+ hour wedding, that could mean up to 50 or 60 hours of work after the shoot, not to mention all the meetings, rehearsals, e-mails, phone calls, shot lists, location scouting trips, time spent photographing, etc. On top of that there are licensing fees, insurance, sample albums and prints, accountants, advertising, business licenses, computer and camera equipment, etc.
Plus I spend countless amounts of time updating my skills as much as possible.
So there you have it. That is why I charge what I do.
